About Me

Hi, I'm Dr. Xiaoke Fei — a New York–based tutor specializing in AP Math, Physics, Statistics, and Computer Science. I help students not only improve their scores, but also develop clear, structured problem-solving skills that stay with them beyond exams.

I teach one-on-one online (in English or Mandarin), and also offer in-person sessions on Roosevelt Island and the Upper East Side of Manhattan.

Why I Teach

Two teachers shaped how I think — my middle school geometry teacher and my high school physics teacher. They didn't just teach content; they taught clarity, structure, and persistence.

But I also discovered something early on: I could quickly identify where someone's thinking went wrong — and explain it in a way that made sense to them.

That ability made tutoring feel natural. I started in college, and I've been teaching ever since.

Academic Background

I completed my undergraduate studies in Computer Science and my master's in Statistics in China, where I also taught calculus courses to undergraduate students.

I later earned my PhD in Applied Mathematics and Statistics from Stony Brook University in 2017.

During my PhD, I worked as a Teaching Assistant for advanced courses, including graduate-level Probability and doctoral-level Mathematical Statistics. In this role, I led recitations, held office hours, and supported students in understanding complex material.

This experience trained me to break down difficult concepts clearly — even for students encountering them for the first time.

Professional Background

After completing my PhD, I have worked as a quantitative researcher, developing machine learning and statistical models to solve real-world problems.

My work draws heavily on applied mathematics, probability, and statistical reasoning — combined with practical programming implementation.

This background allows me to help students not only understand concepts at a deep level, but also apply them in structured and precise ways — whether in mathematics, statistics, or computer science.

Teaching Experience

I primarily work with high school students on AP-level courses, including:

My students come from across the United States, China (Mainland and Hong Kong), and Japan. Many have achieved a score of 5 — the highest possible — on their AP exams.

I'm especially experienced in helping students who feel stuck or lost regain clarity and confidence.

In addition, I have worked with undergraduate students from top universities such as Northwestern University and the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) on college-level calculus.

My Approach

My teaching focuses on three key principles:

  1. Conceptual clarity Students must truly understand the "why" before moving forward.
  2. Structured note-taking I help students build a clear and organized system of notes — a skill that benefits them long after the course ends.
  3. Independent problem-solving My goal is not just to help students get the right answer, but to teach them how to think.

I also stay available outside of class when students need support — especially before exams.

Outside the Classroom

Outside of teaching, I practice fingerstyle guitar daily — a habit that reflects the same patience and consistency I bring to my work. My repertoire is influenced by Japanese fingerstyle guitarists such as Masaaki Kishibe and Shun Komatsubara, whose music I find both technically precise and deeply expressive.

I'm also a lifelong soccer fan. I follow Bayern Munich and AC Milan, and admire players like Ronaldo Nazário and Zinedine Zidane. On the pitch, I play like Juan Román Riquelme — patient, technical, always looking for the right pass.
